Face and Body Painting Contest West Coast Face Painters1st Place

Gen Keller

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN FACE AND/OR BODY PAINTING? I was a volunteer EMT for my town’s ambulance corp. I was working a fundraising table at my town’s 4th of July celebration when a clown asked if I’d be interested in face painting…so I gave it a try and like so many, I fell instantly in love with those smiles reflecting back in the mirror at me.

WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE THAT? I have been involved in workers compensation risk management for the last 22 years of my life (boring!!).

WHAT DO YOU NOW BESIDES FACE AND/OR BODY PAINTING? I am still a risk manager, plus a mom – my most important job! I have taught face painting on occasion, I love working festivals, and I help out at my friend’s spray tan salon.

WHAT PAINT BRANDS ARE YOUR FAVORITES? WHY? Paradise, because they are made in the U.S. – actually they are located only 20 minutes from my house and I love the fact that they allowed me to tour their plant to see how the products are made. And I am so addicted to the smell!!! Coconuts!!!!

IS THERE SOMETHING ELSE ABOUT YOUR CAREER AS A FACE/BODY PAINTER THAT YOU WOULD LIKE OTHERS TO KNOW ABOUT? I think it’s important to remember that we are professional imagination highlighters. Kids do not care about a perfect swirl or a tear drop to die for. They want their imagination to be sparked, their sense of creativity stimulated…don’t limit yourself, don’t be afraid to try new things – the child‘s imagination will take over once you’ve finished and make your painting come alive!

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN FACE AND/OR BODY PAINTING?

I worked in the NYC nightclub scene for many years and used to do makeup on performers, dancers, bartenders (and myself) for special events. I also worked for designer Pat Field as a wig stylist for many years. I did some very elaborate special FX makeup (monster movie theme) Halloween of 2001 on 8 bartenders at a popular lounge in NYC, and that was when face and body really started to grow for me. I then would go to the local park every Sunday and paint kids at the playground for free (the parents of those children became my first clients) and the rest is history.

WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE THAT? Art Art Art "for my soul"... and anything that paid "for money"! I was a coat checker, a waiter, a door person, a go-go dancer, a photographer, a photo studio manager, an illustrator, event producer and then assisted a party planner in NYC before I went "full-time" with my own business(es).

WHAT DO YOU NOW BESIDES FACE AND/OR BODY PAINTING? I make props, costumes, party decor and paint sets as well as write, take photos and hula hoop!

WHAT PAINT BRANDS ARE YOUR FAVORITES? WHY? Mehron - because they were close to me in NYC and I had a close relationship with Shelli Farber (who is not with Mehron anymore, she's now at Wolfe). The Paradise line is not too creamy nor too dry for my tastes. Colors are bright. I also like FAB for airbrush makeup, it is REALLY great stuff AND wears well without flaking off (like some other brands i know...)

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO PAINT? Wide-eyed children.Dreams. People that are INTO getting painted.
