HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN FACE AND/OR BODY PAINTING?

I bought my first pallet in 1991 and while living on a military base I use to paint at birthday parties for friends only. I put my face paint pallet away for quite a while and about 5 years ago jumped back into it full force and love it!

WHAT DO YOU DO BESIDES FACE AND/OR BODY PAINTING?

I am currently illustrating on-line education comics for a chiropractor. These are comics to educate his patients on everything to do with your back, nerves, bones and so on. It is a simple way for adults to understand what is happening. I'm also working on illustrating a children's book. In my free time I paint whimsical cartoony style paintings on canvas that I sell. And I draw all the time. I have been drawing since I could pick up a pencil.

WHAT PAINT BRANDS ARE YOUR FAVORITES? WHY?

Love Wolfe paints and my Kryolan Interferenze pallet. I just love the soft shimmer of the Kryolan pallet for bases.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO PAINT?

I do love to paint funny animals or creatures incorporating the eye or mouth. I think its just so fun how the animal comes to life. Usually when I paint something like that on a customer, once I'm done everyone around me ( including me!) have a good laugh!

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN FACE AND/OR BODY PAINTING? I got started 13 years ago from a friend that I met in VA. where she had facepainting booths in Busch gardens theme parks and Disney theme parks. She asked me if I wanted a job and so it was over from there I was hooked.

WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE THAT? I worked for a dental firm that made and sold dental equipment to dr. and was a full time mom! I finished college in 1996 with a degree in Marine biology and a BA in art/dance.

WHAT DO YOU NOW BESIDES FACE AND/OR BODY PAINTING? Run after 2 teenage daughters that are always on the go and a very active 11 yr old boy that plays many sports and travel all over the world after a hubby that is in the military.

WHAT PAINT BRANDS ARE YOUR FAVORITES? WHY? I love Kryolan, Wolfe, Liquid bling and tons of glitter. I love the way the makeup works and have never had anyone come to me saying they had a reaction. I am simple and I like to keep it that way. I have found recently Arty brush cakes and they are awesome!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO PAINT? a favorite well that is very hard to pin down for me everyone brings something new out in me and when I think it is my fave I find another so I have to say they are all my fave

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN FACE AND/OR BODY PAINTING?
My best friend has an agency providing entertainment services for events. She called me one day in sheer desperation- she had an event that needed a face painter and all her painters were already booked. I agreed to help out. She showed me how to paint a very basic kitty, butterfly and tiger.

When I was at the gig, one woman asked me if I could paint a pink flamingo on her arm. I am never afraid to try something (my best and worst trait) so I attempted it. We both agreed it looked more like a cross between a duck and a tiger and had a good laugh. That's when I fell in love with face painting, and I haven't stopped since!

WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE THAT?
Although I grew up in a family of artists, I am the only one who went into the performing arts. All my life I have been a professional actress, singer and dancer. I made a living for many years doing theatre, commercial and television work.

WHAT DO YOU NOW BESIDES FACE AND/OR BODY PAINTING?
I still act in television and film. I have recently appeared in several Lifetime movies and series and have a leading role in the film, "The Lost and Found Family," now available in DVD.

WHAT PAINT BRANDS ARE YOUR FAVORITES? WHY?
My main kit is Mehron Paradise. I love the creamy consistency. Naturally, I love the Wolfe black and white. For body painting, I have fallen in love with the Kryolan colors, especially for photo shoots. The colors just pop!

IS THERE SOMETHING ELSE ABOUT YOUR CAREER AS A FACE/BODY PAINTER THAT YOU WOULD LIKE OTHERS TO KNOW ABOUT?
I contribute my success as a face/body painter to marketing and networking! If people don't know you exist, they can't hire you. Network, network, network. Besides, there are many incredible people in this business that you would enjoy getting to know.

I have learned so much from my fellow face painters, the ones in my area that I work with and the great artists whose work I follow online and at the conventions. Thank you, all of you, for your inspiration and talent!!!!

Billy Edge

Almost all Billy's working life has been involved with two things; art and clowning. He started as a performance clown when he was 16 and only stopped clowning (after more than 40 years) when he moved here from the UK. During that time he was also a professional cartoonist and illustrator.

He started face painting about 25 years ago as a sort of spin-off from clowning.

Nowadays, though he is more or less retired, he does a lot of writing; recently having written two plays that have been performed as well as having a children's book published ('Blip and the Seat of Arthur'.) He is just finishing a filmscript and he also acts and directs; this year he is going to be directing an open air performance of Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' for a renaissance group.

For paints, he is a great fan of Snazaroo and Wolfe paints.

He feels he is not a fast face painter, and thinks of himself as a performer. He always tell his clients he works more on quality than quanity. He is very creative and makes a new design for almost every client. He tries to base his designs on something the client is wearing. Once he get painting, he tends to get more adults than kids to paint!
